Project Prep Class- This Weekend!

Project Prep Class
Saturday November 14, 2015
1:00pm to 3:00pm
$30 per person- some materials included
Please bring with you: A selection of yarn and needles to match for swatching, a notebook, a tape measure, stitch markers and if available, please bring your tablet or ipad.
This class is one of our most popular classes that we teach and is absolutely essential for knitters of all skill levels to take part in!
Project prep class walks you through the basics of getting set up for any knitting project. We talk about how to navigate ravelry.com- the online pattern mecca, we discuss how to choose a pattern that suits you and your knitting style, how to choose the proper yarn for your project, how to substitute a yarn that a specific pattern calls for and we also discuss tools and materials needed to get started with a project.
We have a lengthy in depth discussion about gauge and how, no matter what you say, your gauge will never be right on for every single project you knit! We talk about the specifics of this and what can change your gauge and how to make adjustments when this does happen and we also show you how to properly check your gauge before proceeding with a project. We end the class with an open discussion for questions and comments that you might have and we really encourage students to come to class with a few questions in mind that we might be able to assist you with!
Our students have given us rave reviews on this class and we highly recommend it to knitters of all skill levels! We have been told by experienced knitters "I went in to this class thinking I knew everything and came out of this class realizing I knew nothing!"
We have 10 seats available in this class and we always sell out! Give us a call at the store to reserve your spot- only a paid seat can be reserved. 705-223-8245

It's almost Fall and new Fall yarns have arrived!

Find us at the KW Knitters' Fair in booths #82-83 and see all of our new yarns and products in person!
New yarns in every weight!
Hey everyone- Rae here. Bethany is enjoying some summer holidays at the moment so I am back at the newsletter!

We are so excited that our new fall yarns are starting to arrive that we can hardly keep ourselves contained! We have received new yarns in every weight AND we still have more on the way! You guys will love these yarns as much as we do so be sure to scroll down and check out all the newbies and samples that we have coordinated with them!

In other news, Stix and Stones is headed to the Kitchener Waterloo Knitter's Fair on September 12th! Be sure to stop by and see us in booth #82-83 as we will be revealing some BRAND NEW yarns at the show!

Enough chatter.... on to the new yarns!

Do you recognize this cowl?
WELL! We received a few skeins of this yarn a few months ago and I designed this cute striped cowl, completely on a whim. Once it was blocked and finished, I posted it on our Facebook page and in two hours, we were SOLD OUT! You guys have been hounding us to get more in ever since and it has been a challenge as our warehouse hasn't had much stock so when they did a huge update- we went crazy!
First we received the semi solid colours of Bamboo Bloom which are amazing and perfect to pair up with a variegated or another solid to stripe for a bit more of a conservative look. Later last week, we received a box FULL of the variegated Bamboo Bloom- the one you have all been waiting for!
We have worked on getting some amazing colour combinations put together in to kits for you all with the pattern and they are just flying out of here! We have only had it a few days and I suspect we will be selling out again soon in a few more days!
Why does everyone love this project so much?

Because it's simple, it's done on fairly large needles, the pattern is straight forward and easy (even for beginners), the yarn is incredibly soft and lovely to work with and it creates a beautiful finished product that will be a fantastic fall accessory or gift for Christmas!

Kits range from $30- $48 depending on which yarns you choose together! Pop by to test it out and you will see what all the hype is about!

New colours in Malabrigo have arrived in some of our favourite yarns!

Malabrigo Sock- $28/skein                          Malabrigo Rasta- $32/skein
Great for a unique pair of socks, mitts,        One skein will do a cowl, hat mitts,
cowls, hats and so much more!                   slippers...anything your heart desires!

Pure Wool Superwash- $12/ball
Brand new colours for the season have arrived and this yarn is great for baby knits or gift knits as it is a 100% machine washable wool!

Ella Rae Lace Merino- $29/skein
A beautiful 100% merino fingering weight that has been hand dyed in the most beautiful tones! One skein is great for a scarf, socks, hats, fingerless gloves and much more!

Another new sample- this is my very own brand new design exclusively for Stix and Stones- The "New Beginnings" Cowl!

We LOVE chevron in all capacities but especially in knitting. It creates a beautiful fabric that is fun to knit and even more fun to wear. We did a push on our Facebook page a few weeks ago about striped patterns and it got me so excited that I started looking up chevron cowls. After lengthy amounts of research, I could not find one that I loved all the elements of. So I designed my own and I am in love!

This pattern is fairly simple using two colours of DK weight yarn- 100gms of each, and 4.5mm needles. The pattern comes free with the purchase of the yarn and becomes a very intuitive knit after a few rows of getting it set up.

We have put together kits with colour suggestions, but you are more than welcome to make up your own combinations of colour! Kits range from $20 to $55depending on your yarn choices, and there are plenty to choose from! You will love it and will want to knit this pattern over and over again!

Spring Cleaning Sale under way!

So, yes, you did read that right! We are having a SALE! Everyone's favourite word! YAY! (No joke, this was the first word my mother ever taught me to spell!)

The sale will run for a few weeks in to the beginning of May- stay tuned for more updates!

So, what's on sale? Only OVER 50 yarns and products storewide!

All sale items will be 30% - 60% off regular price!

As with past sales at Stix and Stones, we have put a lot of the yarn that will be on sale in to bags and it will be on our, now famous, sale tables set up in the store!  What's a little bit different this year is that we've included pattern ideas and inspiration into nearly all of the bags so that you won't be stuck for project ideas when you finally get home with all your lovely bargains! Most of our sale yarns are great for so many different types of projects but it's always nice to have a little inspiration before it goes in the stash.

All of the pattern suggestions can be found on Ravelry. Simply log on and search the pattern name! Some of the patterns are even free! Hooray!

Please note: With the bagged yarn, there are no substitutions of any kind. The bags are sold as is.

We will also have a few ready-made kits, like the one for the Mira Cowl- a personal favourite of mine. No, really! I've made about seven of them!

In addition to the bagged sale table items, there will also be single skeins of yarn on sale, so if you are looking for that one special skein at a great price, you might be in luck! Take a tour around the store to find those gems!
It's not just yarn that will be on sale! All In The Spirit natural body products as well as some of our tea and tea accessories will also be on sale! This is a great opportunity to find a gift for Mom for Mother's Day!

Hope to see you there!

Stix and Stones is on Facebook...are you?

A few weeks back, we put out a survey through the newsletter and one of the most surprising things for us here at Stix and Stones what that nearly half of you who read the newsletter do not follow us on Facebook or any other form of social media.

Now, don't get us wrong.  We LOVE that you all read the newsletter.  But let me tell you why we are on Facebook, and a few reasons why you should follow us there.

First and foremost, Stix and Stones is on Facebook because lots of people are.  It is one of the fastest and most effective ways for us to share information with a good number of our customers.  In the 21st century, it seems that social media and e-mail is where it's at for getting information to the masses.

That's all well and good, you say, but I'm here reading your weekly newsletter in my e-mail inbox.  Shouldn't that be enough?

It should be, but there is only so much that we can fit into a weekly e-mail.  I don't mean to say that important things are left out because they aren't. The first priority of this newsletter is to get the most important information about the store and events and classes gets to you when it needs to.  But a lot can happen in between, and that is where the Facebook page comes in.

Through the Facebook page, we are able to instantly update you as to when a shipment of new product comes into the store, or if something has changed for a class or an event. The Facebook page also gives you a little glimpse into the behind-the-scenes world of the store, which is fun for us, and we hope, fun for those who follow us. I mean, come on, couldn't we all use more adorable pictures of our store mascot Cuzco in our lives??

We also use the Facebook page to share information about stores and events in downtown North Bay in general.  We are very locally minded here at the store, and we like to do everything we can to support other downtown businesses.

Have I convinced you? I certainly hope so!  Here are some very easy steps to following Stix and Stones on Facebook.

Take the plunge: Signing up for Facebook (If you haven't already)

1. Open your internet browser and type www.Facebook.com into the search bar along the top of the screen. Or you can click here...I've provided a short cut!

3. To find Stix and Stones, just type the store's name in the search bar along the top of the screen, like this:

4. Now you should be on our Facebook page!  It looks like this:

To follow us and receive updates on Facebook, click on the "Like" button, and you're done!

We really hope you choose to follow us on Facebook! It's a really easy and fun way to keep in touch with us!

Still don't want to join Facebook, but want to see our page anyway?  The good news is, you can still do that. Just click

Ever heard a fellow knitter say that "knitting is the new yoga"? Well, they actually go together!
Stix and Stones is partnering up with Ruby Yoga Studio to bring you this innovative class where we will discuss the properties of knitting and WHY people always say that knitting is just like doing yoga. We will also be doing some sample knitting to feel what your body does while we are knitting and which parts of the body have strain put on them while knitting and how we can correct that. We will be doing a simple yoga practice to go along with this as well!

This event is on Sunday February 22 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and will be held for one hour at Stix and Stones and for the other hour at Ruby Yoga studio- both on Main Street and just a few doors down from each other.

Cost is $50+HST per person and you can sign up any time at Stix and Stones!
No skill level required- please attend even if you have never knit OR done yoga before!
